I returned a competitor’s headset yesterday after some frustration and waste of time attempting to get them to function. The Turtle Beach Headset has a transmitter that plugs into the USB port on the Xbox where the other pair had a transmitter that stuck on the controller which is simply annoying and impractical. Anyway, the TB Headset arrived today and within a short time after charging the unit they were functioning beautifully! No searching for directions or solutions! The seven has two interchangeable 20 hour batteries. Nova get one gold star lol. The nova has a companion app for your cell phone that allows you to control the equalizer and over 260 different presets for all different sounds. The series 7, requires you to connect to your computer with a wire via an extra peripheral called a gameDAC , and this thing would be convenient, but can’t hold remotely as much presets as the companion app for the cell phone for the nova. The nova can also be connected to your computer to add custom presets to your app which allows even more diversity, but you don’t need to. Nova gets another gold star. This year the nova introduced a new microphone that blows the series 7 microphone out of the water as far as sound quality And that’s another gold star for the nova.

Both pairs made my ears uncomfortable after having worn them for maybe 30 minutes. They would always cut out whether the dongle was plugged into the back of the PlayStation or into the front. I know that Sony’s pretty good about updating their firmware so there shouldn’t have been any issues in that regard. I spent so long asking people and reading through reviews until I finally settled upon these. So far I’m not disappointed! The ones that are labeled for Xbox are $50 cheaper than the ones labeled for PlayStation, and they’re the exact same thing. And the “Xbox” branded ones are compatible with PlayStation, Switch, PC, and mobile. They can also switch to Bluetooth mode if you don’t want to use the dongle, and the sound quality for music using my phone was actually pretty decent for middle of the road. The retractable microphone and alleged up to 60 hours of battery life makes the fact that they’re lightweight even better. And the most important part, they’re comfortable. They adjust to accommodate most head sizes I would assume. These gaming headphones are a great recommendation from me! I did read one review where somebody complained about the mic quality. On my PS4, I just used a cheap, corded headset that had a TRRS plug that plugged into the PS4’s controller.Late last December, I half-heartedly ordered a PS5 via Sony’s website and to my shock, received a PS5 a few days later. The console’s been great, but the most prevalent issue I’ve had with it is the controller’s set up.The PS5’s controller has a built-in microphone and speaker. For one, I am hard of hearing so my friends’ voices through the tiny, tinny sounding speaker are barely audible to me. For another, every friend in chat has bluntly commanded me to stop using the controller’s mic; I sound terrible through it, apparently.I simply went back to my old, corded headset. However, friends regularly balked that I had an annoying “echo” caused by the PS5. The issue is, when you disable the PS5’s controller mic, you disable the input ring of the PS5’s TRRS jack. In other words, disable the controller mic, you disable the corded headset mic as well. So, I couldn’t eliminate my pesky echo via software settings.I decided to splurge and get a cordless headset. Initially, I wanted a headset that didn’t need a Bluetooth dongle, seeing as the PS5 supports Bluetooth devices……..So long as said devices aren’t speakers or microphones.So, yeah, I wound up needing the dongle that this headset comes with. So, none of us are able to discern if this headset’s speakers and mic are providing higher or lower quality audio to all of us.Despite all this, my friends seem relieved that my echo is gone now, and while I’m not a fan of plugging in the dongle, powering this headset up, and waiting for them to pair, I very much enjoy not being tethered to my controller, so it’s a tradeoff I’m willing to take.Finally, I have a very elliptically shaped head (I shave my head, that’s how I know) and my ears, as far as I’m concerned, are properly proportioned to my head. Customer Review: I have a pair of Philips SHP9500’s that I’ve used for YEARS when gaming, and then have had various separate microphones to go with them (since they don’t have a built in mic). The biggest issues with that is that, well, I need a separate mic, and that can be a pain depending on what platform I’m playing on, and on top of that, they are open back headphones. EXTREMELY comfortable, and fantastic sound when driven correctly, but they have pretty bad sound bleed, so whatever mic I use usually has to have some pretty serious noise suppression/gating to cut out the bleed. These, however, solve that problem pretty well. First, they’re closed back, so they encapsulate the sound a LOT more. This makes them a bit bass-ier (although not by THAT much), but also keeps out the bleed. They also have a built in mic (both within the headset, and with the included detachable mic (don’t forget to double check the bag! Thought mine was missing it until I went digging again)). As far as quality goes, they clearly aren’t super high end headphones, but to be honest, for most people, I think these would be totally fine, especially as they can be used wirelessly. The mic is also totally fine, even without using the detachable one, and would be totally fine for your normal voice chat during games, or chilling in Discord or something. As previously mentioned, these are wireless, but keep in mind some caveats. If you want/can use the Bluetooth feature, then they’re totally wireless, although expect a bit of audio delay, and the overall audio quality will be not as good. However, these also have 2.4ghz wireless, although in a kind of odd way. Instead of a USB dongle like most wireless headphones, these have a module that plugs into the bottom of an Xbox One/Series controller. This allows them to be used wirelessly on an Xbox One/Series console, with controls right there (there’s also controls on the headphones themselves). That might make you think that you can’t use them wirelessly with other stuff, but that’s not the case at all! Turns out, that module has a built in battery, but if you connect it via USB C to your PC or your PS4/PS5, it just acts as a wireless dongle, letting you use the headphones wirelessly with those devices too. A bit of an odd way to do it, but it works totally fine! You can also use these wired via the included 3.5mm cable too. Overall, I actually like these, although with it getting hotter here by the day, not sure how sweaty I’ll really want to be (I REALLY like open back headphones due to this), especially as they have fake leather cups, but so far, I’m enjoying them a lot.

My research led me to deciding between these, the v3 pro’s , and the Audeze maxwell (I am a sucker for Magnar Planar headphones). All the reviews I read stated the only real difference between these and the Pro’s is the ANC (noise cancelation) and that they sound virtually identical otherwise. So that left me with these or the Audeze and for HALF the cost of the Maxwell’s I figured I’d order these to try em out and if they weren’t good enough I’d just get the Maxwell’s (I KNOW those sound amazing they’re just heavy lol).Now that I’ve done some testing let me tell you these are INCREDIBLE. I am SHOCKED at what a massive upgrade they are from the Blackshark V2’s. I was pretty happy with those and these are drastically better. The ear cups are much more comfortable, the sound stage is insanely good for closed back cans, bluetooth WITH simultanious sound capability (you can connect to bluetooth AND 2.4ghz wireless at the same time. So you could listen to tunes from your phone while gaming on ur pc/ps5/switch/xbox. AT THE SAME TIME.), the addition of THX spatial surround sound is a GAME CHANGER , and they still do all the things the V2 did great as well like all day comfort, light weight, great comfy design, the fantastic “knob” , and all day+ battery life. I do mean ALL DAY plus too. I work from home using them a solid 9 hours every day then immediately fire up my gaming pc lol so the avg day is 10 hours at least and I’ve never once even gotten a low battery warning let alone having them die.Now, I need to mention you absolutely MUST download the THX spatial sound app if you have windows 11. I know it’s annoying but it is a massive improvement. It is not some meaningless gimmick that software takes this headset from “yeah that’s alright” to “WOW. That is INCREDIBLE”. The quick profiles are VERY noticeable. The bass boost actually does something meaningful to the sub bass (not just cause muddled nonsense lol) . Turning on THX Spacial and watching a movie with these really feels like being at the theatre. The sound stage is wild for a closed back gaming headset. If you are into nice headphones you know how much better the sound stage is on open back headphones and while yes, this isn’t quite that, it is one of the best I’ve ever experienced from a “gaming headset” let alone one that is only $150. AND IT’S WIRELESS!? Games are just as amazing. The details , sound stage, and again surround sound is fantastic. I know EXACTLY where those footsteps and gun fire are coming from. Explosions are FULL and ear shaking. The volume on these is also very good. Normally I am a “crank it” listener but with these at 70% i’m tapping out lolMusic sounds full and detailed on this headset. I typically use speakers or my nicer plug in amp/cans for music but these are actually good enough I don’t IMMEDIATELY reach for them like I have for the past few years lol The bass on these is pretty solid and it does an impressive job at allowing the each sound/instrument have it’s own “lane” in the sound stage. There is very very minimal “muddying” when you have the music EQ dialed in.Overall, if you’re looking for a new headset OR having an aging wireless headset from the previous generation (v2, arctis 7, Hyper cloud alpha, A50, etc) I HIGHLY recommend you at least give these a try because you will not find anything remotely close at this price. To find a higher quality set you’re going to spend at least twice as much and they tend to be quite a bit heavier which is a bit rough for long sessions. If you need noise cancelation or the upgraded mic then spend the extra $100 on the Pro’s but if you don’t NEED those 2 features save the $ and buy these. I really can’t see how anyone could be disappointed with these if they are using the THX app and dialing in the EQ these bad boys absolutely SHINE. Just order them already and thank me later.
