  • Lightweight yet feels sturdy and well-built.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: At first I wasn’t sure how it would be given the size of monitors I am accustomed to in the office. However, this is the perfect second monitor while traveling. Compact and light. Very clear screen and easy adjustment settings on the side. The only this I would have done differently is to purchase the touch screen model. I will do that next time. It was super simple to setup and connect. Allows me to be more productive with a second screen.

Customer Review: I tested many of these, and I have to say that this one is absolutely perfect because you don’t need a mini adapter for HDMI. It’s a full HDMI. You could just go stick a Fire Stick in there and not worry that you have the adapter or it’s hanging off the edge. For example, it’s ready to use. It can be powered by the device if necessary, with limited functionality, but still, like off your cell phone. But with full functionality, you could probably power it With a power bank of any size, and the quality of the screen is awesome. It’s thin, it wraps into its own case, which you can use as a stand at two different levels. The speakers are decent, but considering everything else is awesome, it won’t matter. It’s got 120 hertz coverage, v-sync, and it has HDR at 1080p. You can’t go wrong for the price compared to all the others.

Sleeve included is really needed since it doesn’t fit most laptop backpack bags. Pass through power works flawlessly and need only included cord to connect to usb while source is plugged in. Great product!

This generic-brand model proves you don’t need to break the bank for a capable portable display. It nails the essentials: a sharp 1080p IPS panel, USB-C and HDMI inputs, and an ultra-slim, lightweight aluminum body. The “zero-frame” design maximizes screen real estate and looks modern. Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I absolutely love this portable 4K monitor. I originally bought it for traveling, but I’ve ended up using it just as much at home in my second office — it’s a total game changer. The 4K screen quality is beautiful and crisp, and I’m really glad I invested in the higher resolution. I love how easy it is to adjust the brightness on the side, and the one-cord setup makes it incredibly simple and clutter-free. It’s just as thin as my MacBook and fits perfectly in my laptop case, making it ideal for travel. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a high-quality, portable second screen.

Customer Review: Great product for the price. The picture quality is better than I expected it to be. It is a quick set up via connection cord. There is sound, but I never use it since the sound quality isn’t as good as MacBook speakers. The only complaint I have is the location of the USB-C port. I place the screen on the left of my MacBook, and the USB-C port for both this device and the MacBook is on the left. Not enough of a complaint to lower the star rating, but wanted to make note of that.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: I sat on this one for far too long. I honestly didn’t really know portable external monitors were even a thing until the past year when I saw one at Costco. I was thinking that might actually be be pretty handy for work, as I tend to deal with multiple programs simultaneously including at meetings when I’m trying to show someone something like a spreadsheet and graphs, and so on. I also thought it’d be great for when I do conference travel or on the occasions I have to work from home. My home office already has a dual monitor setup with docking station so that’s easy, however, there are times my husband also works from home and we fight over the monitor setup, so this might just save our marriage. 😉 Joking aside, I wish we had this thing during the pandemic shutdown because it would have made working from home so much easier. I’ve had this one in my cart for quite some time, and then noticed around Black Friday/ Cyber Monday, it was an extra 15 off or so, and I decided to leap. In deciding which monitor to get, there were mostly positive reviews, though some more critical. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but have thus far been absolutely blown away! My favorite features: –It is quite thin and lightweight, in a nice and portable way rather than “this is a cheap piece of… ” way –The quality is phenomenal. Very crisp and clear and plenty bright without being blinding. There are settings to mess with too, though I found it perfect right out of the box –It comes with multiple connectors so should work for a variety of purposes and with different computer or other device configurations –It was pretty much plug and play straight out of the box. It turned on with 0 issues. My PC laptop always defaults second monitors to duplicate screens rather than extending screens, so I wasn’t surprised when this was the same. It was a simple, quick fix by going to my display settings and changing the monitor to extend rather than duplicate. I had to switch my monitors around in settings so this monitor would work with dragging things from my laptop monitor to the right, rather than to the left due to my preferences. It might be tricky if you’ve never done it, but it’s old hat for me. Long story short, play around with your display settings until all is configured the way you want. I find when I plug it in again, it automatically defaults to this setup unless I have changed the settings for a different monitor setup at work or home, and then I might need to reset again. I could see where a duplicate screen could actually be handy in a meeting, however, at a meeting where multiple people around a table need to see the same thing, so I could have my laptop facing one direction, and the other screen facing another. I see so many possibilities with this one, actually, for work purposes and I’m grateful to have it. –It comes with a felt carrying case which is perfect for keeping the screen scratch-free and keeping the cables and such together. The velcro doesn’t fasten if you have the stand connected, but it still all fits in the case just the same. –I’ve looked at many different portable monitors, but ultimately loved this one for coming with multiple adaptors/ cords and the adjustable monitor stand, saving me time and money. The stand is very easy to install and uninstall — just two simple screws and it’s fairly adjustable so you can line it up with your laptop screen if that’s your preference, or change the angle. It works very well for my needs, but if you have super specific needs or need to raise it up or down quite a bit, you may want to look at a different monitor stand with more adjustments. I found this one to be just right, however. My only criticism so far, but the pros far outweigh the cons! –As mentioned, the carrying case won’t fasten if you have the monitor stand attached. It’s pretty minor, but do wish the velcro had a couple different fastening settings so everything could close up with or without the stand. Yes, I could technically remove the stand easily but would prefer to have everything set up and ready to go for quick access. Long story short, run, don’t walk, and grab this monitor! Whether you need it for work purposes or for gaming capability (per many of the other reviews), this monitor is fire! I highly recommend!

Customer Review: I really like this monitor and its the first one I ever bought. The screen quality is clean, sharp, and looks way better than I expected for a portable monitor. Colors are solid, brightness is good, and it’s been super reliable whether I’m using it with my laptop or other devices. Setup was easy, no weird issues, and it just works. The only thing worth mentioning and this is honestly more of an extra than a complaint is the included stand sits a little low. If you have a taller main monitor or a PC setup and want everything perfectly lined up at the same height, you’ll probably want a taller stand. That said, the stand was a bonus item anyway, not the main product. I still found a good use for it and now use it with my iPad, so nothing went to waste. Overall, great quality, great value, and I’d definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a portable monitor that actually delivers.

6. VisionOwl Portable Monitor

VisionOwl 18.5-inch Portable Monitor: IPS USB-C/HDMI, Built-in Kicksta

Stand out from the 15.6-inch crowd with the VisionOwl 18.5-inch model. This larger screen offers significantly more screen real estate, making it a true productivity booster. It maintains good portability and features a 100Hz refresh rate, which is a notable upgrade for smoother scrolling and casual gaming. The built-in kickstand is sturdy and adjustable, and it includes a nice protective sleeve. For users who find 15.6″ still too small, this is the best large-format portable monitor without jumping to a much heavier 22″+ model.

Key Features That Stand Out

  • Large 18.5-inch Screen: More space for windows and apps.
  • 100Hz Refresh Rate: Smoother motion than standard 60Hz.
  • Sturdy Built-in Kickstand: No separate stand to lose.
  • USB-C & HDMI Connectivity: Full compatibility.
  • Includes Protective Sleeve: Good protection for the larger size.

Why We Recommend It

This monitor is the top pick for anyone who wants a portable screen that feels more like a primary desktop monitor. The extra 3 inches make a real difference for multitasking, and the 100Hz panel adds a layer of smoothness you’ll notice immediately. It balances size and portability better than any other large-screen option we tested.

Best For

Power users, developers, video editors, and gamers who want maximum screen space in a portable form. Also ideal for those who use their laptop on a desk most of the time and want a substantial secondary display that can be packed away.

Pros and Cons

Pros:
  • Significantly more screen real estate than 15.6″ models.
  • 100Hz refresh rate provides a noticeably smoother experience.
  • Sturdy, well-designed built-in kickstand.
  • Still relatively portable and lightweight for its size.
  • Picture quality is sharp with good colors.
Cons:
  • Larger size means it takes up more space in a bag.
  • Not as “ultra-portable” as 15.6″ models (though still very mobile).
  • Brightness is standard, not outstanding.
  • No built-in speakers.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: The media could not be loaded. I got the 18.5″ monitor. So worth it. Though the camera does not capture the resolution of the monitor super well, in person, the resolution is great! I’mnot sure how it would be with video games, but for refular work/computer tasks, it’s great! It’s perfect for my traveling needs. It’s light and thin, with a great grippy kick-stand, and it also comes with a really nice grey protective sleeve (also pictured). “Set-up” takes all of 30 seconds, just connect monitor to power source (comes with monitor), and the HDMI cable — that also comes with the monitor, — to the computer, et voilà!

Customer Review: This is a great monitor. It is very big for a portable monitor yet still easy to carry around. I love that it comes with its own case since it’s not a standard size that you could buy a laptop sleeve for. I bought this to use as my main monitor for work when I am traveling. There is so much more screen real estate than on my 14 inch laptop. It also plays video very clearly. I have been very impressed with it so far. The kickstand is also very sturdy and it’s much easier to use than portable monitors that have the fold over flap as a built-in stand. I have one of those and it falls over all the time. This monitor stays up easily and can be adjusted to any angle.

This is a slightly different variant from the #1 InnoView, and it’s worth a look for its specific strengths. It features a 90° adjustable stand that offers a good range of tilt, and it comes with a protective sleeve as part of the package. The display is a solid 1080p IPS panel. • Includes Protective Sleeve: Comprehensive carry solution.
  • Slim, Lightweight Design: Very portable.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: This screen is well worth it! Better than I expected really. The quality of the image is sharp. I’m not a gamer but using it to stream video meets my needs for sure. The speaker is a little quiet but the fact that it even has one is a nice feature. I wanted a smaller screen so to match my laptop size so I got the 15.6in and it’s perfect! Very slim! Very light! Mostly I use it for work and wanted something I could both travel with and put away easily so it’s perfect both at home and taking with me. Seeing how I love it around a lot I can say that it doesn’t feel flimsy. The kick stand for this really lets you change angle of the tilt to whenever you need it. It is for sure a plug and play so it’s ready to go straight from the box. Maybe I missed it in the description but I was surprised it had its own protective sleeve. I tried several – that were a lot more expensive – and some had drivers to install, really showed fingerprints as soon as you touched it, the stand didn’t sit the way I needed it, none of the others had a protective sleeve, most didn’t have a speaker but one that did I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to get sound to come out of it (and I’m pretty tech savvy), some felt heavy. So again, this one is easy to use and a quality product. If I needed another one, I’d definitely buy this again. 🙂

Customer Review: I bought this to use as a second screen for my laptop while traveling. It exceeded my expectations. The monitor is very thin and light. It slides easily into my laptop bag without adding bulk. The build quality feels solid. The frame does not flex when you hold it. The stand holds the screen steady on a desk. It does not wobble during normal use. Setup took less than a minute. I plugged it into my laptop and it worked right away. No drivers. No complicated settings. The picture quality is excellent for a portable monitor. The 1080p display looks sharp. Colors are clear and text is easy to read. I use it for documents, web browsing, and video and it handles everything well. Brightness is strong enough for normal indoor use. I had no problem using it in a well lit room. If you need extra screen space for work, travel, or school, this is a great option. It is portable, sturdy, and the display quality is better than I expected for the price.

Setup was completely plug-and-play. For the price, you absolutely cannot beat it. Highly recommend for anyone needing an extra screen on a budget.

Customer Review: I needed a second monitor for when I work from coffee shops and this fits the bill perfectly. It’s light, thin, and the 15.6-inch size is just right—not too big to be cumbersome, not too small to be useless. The screen looks great, text is clear, and it doesn’t strain my eyes. The USB-C connection is so convenient; one cable does it all. The included sleeve is a nice touch for protection. After using it for a few weeks, it’s been completely reliable. No issues at all. Customer Review: I use this as a secondary monitor. Setup in a vertical fashion to save space on my desk. It works great i love it! Plug and play compatability with zero issues on a windows 10 machine. Screen quality is not top notch like some sort of LG gaming monitor but it is 1080p and has a sharp image with nice color. No issues with polarizing either. Its portable like a 15 inch laptop would be if you needed that and runs on a usb c power supply.

Customer Reviews

Customer Review: The display monitor exceeds every expectation I had, while remaining cheap, high-quality, and portable. Emphasis should be placed on the portability of this item, as its form factor, being thin and sleek, is complemented by its ability to utilize most devices, power supply, so as to do away with any external power supply outlet plug-in. Additionally, unless extenuating circumstances somehow present themselves, setting up and connecting to the display requires zero external knowledge or guidance. It is also nice that only one USB-C display cable, which is included, Comes equipped with a USB a adapter, therefore making the product accessible to Annie user unless VGA connections are at play (Which, unless you are using very old systems, shouldn’t be a factor).10 out of 10 product and I would highly recommend it to anyone and would buy again (And in my case, I did buy an additional unit for dual display purposes once I confirmed the product was to my liking).

Customer Review: The screen is super clear, bright, and lightweight. No need to charge it, just plug it into your computer, and it’s on. 100% recommend. I’ve had it for a couple of months now, it hasn’t died on me, and I don’t expect it to.

Complete Buying Guide for Best Portable Monitor For Laptop

Essential Factors We Consider

Choosing the right portable monitor hinges on a few key factors. Screen Size & Resolution: 15.6 inches with 1080p (FHD) is the sweet spot for portability and usability. Some offer 4K or larger 18.5″ screens for more space. Connectivity: Look for at least one full-function USB-C port that carries both video and power. An HDMI port adds versatility for gaming consoles. Portability: Consider weight (under 2 lbs is ideal) and thickness. A good protective case or built-in stand is crucial. Panel Type: IPS panels offer the best viewing angles and color. Brightness & Color: 250 nits is standard; 300+ is better for bright environments. 85% sRGB is good for general use. Extras: Built-in speakers, VESA mount compatibility, and HDR/FreeSync for gamers add value.

Budget Planning

You can find a capable budget portable monitor for $150-$200. These offer solid 1080p IPS screens, USB-C, and basic stands. Mid-range models ($200-$300) add better color gamuts (85% sRGB), HDR, built-in speakers, and VESA mounts. Premium options from brands like ASUS run $300-$400, justifying the cost with superior build, innovative stands (like the ZenScreen’s), and extended warranties. Decide which features are must-haves for your use case and allocate your budget accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I use a portable monitor with a MacBook?

A: Yes, absolutely. Most modern portable monitors work seamlessly with MacBooks via USB-C. Ensure the monitor supports “full-function” USB-C for power and video over a single cable. Some older MacBooks with only USB-A may require an adapter, but the ASUS ZenScreen includes one.

Q: Do portable monitors work with gaming consoles like Switch or PS5?

A: Many do. Look for monitors with an HDMI input. The Nintendo Switch, in particular, is a perfect match for portable monitors. For PS5/Xbox Series X, ensure the monitor supports at least 1080p at 60Hz. Some higher-end models with 100Hz+ refresh rates and FreeSync offer a better gaming experience.

Q: How is the monitor powered?

A: Most are powered via the USB-C cable connected to your laptop (if your laptop supports power delivery through that port). Others can be powered by a USB-C wall charger or a power bank. Always check the power requirements; some larger or higher-refresh-rate screens may need their own dedicated power adapter.

Q: Are portable monitors good for photo editing?

Q: Will a portable monitor work with my desktop PC?

A: Yes. Connect via USB-C (if your desktop has a USB-C port with DisplayPort Alt Mode) or use the HDMI input. They function exactly like any other external monitor.
